$1.49 Booklet Inscription

The $1.49 Flower booklet has been found with the inscription shifted to the left in relation to the colour ("traffic light") dots.

It is believed that the "C over O" is a second printing - but that is a guess. For the time being, the "C over O" is harder to find than the "C over S". If this is a new printing, then they will become more plentiful as time passes.

51c Flag Over...

The 51c Flag Over... stamps (5 designs) have small rouletting between the 2nd and 3rd column of stamps ... except on the First Day Covers.

There is no rouletting on the strip of 5 stamps that are on the FDC.

It is quite possible that the strip of 5 stamps that will be supplied in the First Quarter Pack (and the annual souvenir collection) will be similar to the stamps used on the FDC - no rouletting. We will need to to wait until mid-April to find out.

$1.05 White-Tailed Deer

A new ... and unique ... printing of the $1.05 White-tailed Deer stamp has just been reported (Nov 2005).

2005 Christmas Snowman - A First
A first in Canadian philately!

There are two different kinds of die cutting on the 2005 Christmas Snowman stamp issued Nov 2/05.

The 3 stamps found in the first and third rows of the pane start with a "half peak", followed by a valley, peak, valley, peak, etc.

The 3 stamps found in the second and fourth rows of the pane start with a "half valley", followed by a peak, valley, peak, valley, etc.

50c Flag over Houses - Design difference
The 50c Flag Over Houses stamp sometimes shows a subtle design difference on stamps found on the original C paper vs the newer F paper booklets.

The roof on the foremost house has a solid appearance on the C-paper booklet while the roof appears 'streaky' on some F-paper booklets.

A quick glance at the other four Flag Over... stamps did not result in any differences between these. Can you find any?

50c Flag over... Rouletting
The 50c Queen and 50c Flag Over ... booklets have been reprinted.

The Canada Post details magazine indicates that on May 30, 2005 these booklets were reprinted on "F" paper - the originals were on "C" paper.

The magazine also notes that you can order sets of 5 and 25 booklet covers, respectively.

It has been confirmed that the new printing 50c Flag Over ... printing has 29 roulettes.

50c Flag over... Rouletting
The 2005/1 Quarterly Pack (qtr 1) contains a strip of 5 of the 50c Flag over... designs. This item is unique and not available in this format from anywhere else!

What makes it unique? The rouletted slits.

To date, panes of 10 have been found with 5, 29, and 23 slits per pane. [By the way, the 23 slits, first seen in Feb 2005, are proving to be very, very, very hard to find.]

The quarterly pack strip of 5 has 12 slits vertically ... but they are slightly, yet noticeably, different from the 23 slits found on the pane of 10. Notice the location of the slit at the bottom of the strip compared to the slit at the middle of the pane of 10...

50c Queen Elizabeth II Rouletting
The 50c Queen Elizabeth II booklet, issued in Dec 2004 with WIDE (5 slits) rouletting, has now appeared with NARROW (23 slits) rouletting (Apr 2005).

Five different covers are available for each, depending on the advertisement.

TD Bank Issue
The design of the issued TD Bank stamp (March 18) differs significantly from the pre-issue announcement.

The illustration on the left is the pre-issue image; the actual stamp is shown on the right.

50c Flag Over... Rouletting
The 50c Flag Over... booklet, issued in Dec 2004 with TWO different rouletting patterns, has appeared in early Feb 2005 with a THIRD pattern!

This now gives us 75 different booklet cover combinations to collect (see below).

The original release of this booklet saw wide (5 roulettes) and narrow (29 roulettes). The Feb 2005 "reprint" is still narrow, but there are only 23 roulettes per pane.

$1.45 Flower Booklet ... Many varieties
Earlier I reported that the new $1.45 Flower booklet had already been found reprinted. This needs to be corrected...

Actually, TWO different types of inscriptions were both available on the first day of issue. It appears as though the booklets with inscriptions on the left side were distributed to the west coast and the rest of the country initially received booklets with inscriptions on the right side [areas in the east are just now starting to see "left" inscriptions].

The story has been fully written on this one...stayed tuned!

85c/$1.45 Flower Tagging
The new 85c and $1.45 Flower booklet panes each come with TWO different widths of tagging:
  • 4mm solid all around (passes over top of the design
  • 3mm that cuts around the design

It appears as though neither one is more difficult to find than the other.

50c Booklet Advertising

Check out the TETE-BECHE cutting errors.

The 50c Queen booklet comes with FIVE different advertisements on the cover.

The 50c Flag over ... booklet comes with TWENTY-FIVE different covers! (5 different ads x 5 different top images - use the grid below as a checklist). Each booklet has a small 2-letter code in the lower right corner of the back cover  that designates the particular version: the first letter  stands for the scene and the second for the ad version (A-E).

In addition, there are two different rouletting patterns on the 50c Flag booklets, similar to what has been seen on the 49c booklets. This DOUBLES the number of booklets noted above to 50!!!

A THIRD type of narrow rouletting began to appear in early Feb 2005. Thus, there is the potential of 75 different booklets to obtain!

49c Flag Booklet Rouletting
In Dec 2004, just weeks before being made 'obsolete', the 49c Flag booklet of 10 has been found with a new rouletting/printer/paper combination.

The original printing, by Ashton-Potter, had no rouletting across the middle of the pane (top illustration).

The CBN printing, on F paper, has wide roulettes (about 4-5 per pane) (bottom illustration).

The original CBN printing on C paper, has many, narrow roulettes (middle illustration). The new booklet discovered in December, has the wide roulettes (bottom illustration).

[By the way, the 49c QE II booklet comes with the above rouletting varieties, and yet another, different from the rest!]

49c-era Definitive Booklets reprinted
All FOUR of the current (49c era) definitive booklets have been reprinted giving NINE new varieties to hunt down. These started appearing in late June 2004.

Three of the booklets have been reprinted due to a change in printer.

Shown in the table is the Paper (C or F) as noted beside the 'traffic light' inscriptions; UPC barcode (found on the back of the cover); and the back cover advertisement text (for some reason, the 80c and $1.40 Leaf booklets did not have new ad on the back of the reprints).

There are other differences between many of the booklets including the rouletting down the centre of the pane and the width of the red product information band at the top of the pane of stamps.

'Unique' Golf Stamps

The self-adhesive Golfing stamps issued on August 12, 2004 have a couple of innovative features:

  • the die cutting simulates the 'dimpled' affect of real golf balls
  • the size of the stamps is the same as real golf balls
  • the backing paper reads "replace divot" (in English and French) when the stamps are removed. This is a very significant phrase to golfers.

This issue was announced as "sold out" from the National Philatelic Centre in Antigonish, Nova Scotia as early as two months prior to the stamps being released. However, a couple of weeks prior to their release, additional stock was suddenly available (was there a second printing?).

2004 University Booklets

Two new designs appeared in the "University" stamp series in 2004.

What Canada Post did not tell us is that there are TWO different covers available for each booklet - a philatelic version (open) and a field stock version (sealed).

The difference, as in all previous University booklets, is in the UPC barcode.
